ISO Standards in Conference Interpreting

ISO standards are international best practice standards created by experts in 1947 with the aim of ensuring the quality, safety and efficiency of the provided equipment, services and systems. They are highly valued internationally, in both public and private sectors, as they allow companies and administrations to ensure and comply with quality services, allow for fair tendering processes and establish trust with business partners.
Below we summarise, as part of the sector, those key ISO standards which, as providers of conference interpreting, audiovisual and language services, must be taken into account:
ISO 23155:2022 | Interpreting services — Conference interpreting — Requirements and recommendations
Establishes the requirements and recommendations in terms of qualifications and language skills, confidentiality and interpreting modes (simultaneous, consecutive, whispered or liaison) in conference interpreting services.
ISO 17651-1:2024 | Simultaneous interpreting — Interpreters’ working environment
Part 1: Requirements and recommendations for permanent booths
Provides the requirements and recommendations for the design, use and accessibility of fixed simultaneous interpreting booths in new or existing buildings.
ISO 17651-2:2024 | Simultaneous interpreting — Interpreters’ working environment
Part 2: Requirements and recommendations for mobile booths
Establishes the requirements and recommendations for the design, use and accessibility of mobile simultaneous interpreting booths.
ISO 20109:2025 | Simultaneous interpreting — Equipment — Requirements
Highlights the requirements for the technical equipment and audio-visual quality (such as optimized frequency and efficient audio processing latency) needed to ensure interpreters receive excellent audio signal during simultaneous interpreting.
ISO 22259:2019 | Conference systems — Equipment — Requirements
Specifies the requirements, components and characteristics of conference systems and the auxiliary devices necessary for their use (such as microphones, headphones, and sound equipment).
ISO 24019:2022 | Simultaneous interpreting delivery platforms — Requirements and recommendations
Highlights the requirements and recommendations regarding the use of simultaneous interpreting delivery platforms at events where interpreters are not at the same venue as participants and speakers.
ISO 17100:2015 | Translation services — Requirements for translation services
Specifies the requirements for all aspects of the key processes, human resources and delivery in translation services.
ISO 9001:2026 | Quality management systems — Requirements
Lists the required criteria for quality management systems and performance evaluation by putting a great focus on quality delivery, customer satisfaction and continual improvement.
